Tasmania is one of those places that surprises you at every turn. I think the locals are keeping it a secret as to how beautiful this little island south of the mainland of Australia is. I think they want to keep it all to themselves and I can understand why. I recently fell in love with Binalong bay in the Bay of Fires which is on the East Coast of the Island and it has the whitest, finest sand and bluest azure water in the world, along with the magnificant granite boulders which are tinged with bright orange lichen….it’s a photographer’s, holiday maker’s or visitor’s paradise!
Binalong Bay and the Bay of Fires offer all kinds of outdoor activities, from scenic coastal walks and beachside fun to some of the world’s best game fishing. Fascinating sea life can be seen on local guided diving and snorkeling tours, revealing an underwater world of scenic reefs, spectacular sponges and corals, underwater caves and colourful marine life.
The Bay of Fires Conservation Area offers beach-side camping and the elevated sites amongst the acacia trees have amazing views of the coast and sea.
Location:
Binalong Bay is a small coastal town, a 15 minute drive from St Helens and a 2.5 hours drive from Launceston. To find the famous tree that everyone loves to take photos of, follow Binalong Bay Road until you get the pointy end of Binalong Bay. There will be a carpark on your left and you will have to walk across a small field. As you come up on the hill you will see the tree in front of you.
What you will need:
If it is summer bring your swimmers so you can swim in the clearest waters you will ever see. It will probably still be a bit fresh even in summer but the colour of the water and sand is too hard to resist!
Otherwise if you are photographing the bay then you will need a circular polariser to put on the front of your lens so that you can draw out the amazing blue colours and accentuate the orange of the rocks.
If you are photographing the lonely tree, your usual gear; camera, tripod, filters, shutter release cable. You may want to get in the water to get a good perspective of the tree so be prepared to get your feet wet depending on the tide!
Time of Day:
For beautiful beach photos with blue water and white sand then any time during the day but usually when the sun is high in the sky to make the most of your circular polariser. Otherwise sunset or sunrise to capture the beautiful colours in the sky.
Tides:
Mid tide to high tide is usually good so that there is some water around the rocks if you are photographing the lonely tree. But this place is so beautiful it doesn’t really matter what the tide is doing!
