I hate flying. There I said it! The thought of having to take a flight longer than 3 hours sets my heart a flutter and my palms become clammy. My first big flight was when I moved to London about 6 years ago. The flight there was fine but I did numerous little flights while travelling around Europe that scared the life out of me and has made me a very nervous flyer. Plus I have a wild imagination so that doesn’t help.

So when we recently decided to go to Canada for a 3 week holiday my fears came rushing back immediately. I wasn’t going to let my crazy anxiety stop me from ticking my No.1  thing off my backlist – Canada. For the last 10 years I have wanted to go to Canada and the time was now!

I got to thinking about what it was about flying that I hated so much – apart from the fact that my life is completely in the hands of the pilot but I rationalised that by flying with Qantas who are a reputable company. So what else? Yes its uncomfortable sitting in cattle class for 14 hours and then I realised it was the noise. The constant, loud drone of the engines. And the sound of the engines changing speed that really gets to me.

A friend suggested I try noise cancelling headphones so I researched every single brand and most people were saying that Bose were the most effective at cancelling out the engine noise. So I went and purchased a pair of their latest Bose QuietComfort 25 Headphones, White. Now they aren’t the cheapest accessory I will admit with a price tag of $399 but I figured I can claim the GST back at the airport which meant that they were $360 thereabouts. Thats still a lot of money, but I will do anything to be comfortable when it comes to flying.

I have to say that from the minute I stepped on the plane and into my seat I was wearing them and literally after 5  minutes I was thinking to myself – “Best money ever spent!”. I felt like I was in this warm little cocoon of calm and silence. I couldn’t hear the noise of people rustling around and getting to their seats, I couldn’t hear the engine. I just sat there and turned on my playlist on my iPhone and chilled out listening to all my favourite songs while chaos was all around me.

I pretty much stayed like that the whole entire flight except for toilet breaks and as soon as you take those babies off your ears you are once again confronted with the noisy engine, crying babies, people coughing and sneezing. I couldn’t wait to get back to my seat to drown it all out again.

It is the calmest I have ever been on a flight – even after we sat on the tarmac for the first hour while the pilots decided whether to fly or not because the cruise control wasn’t working!

  • They come with a iPhone plug so that you can listen to music/audio on your iPhone, iPod or iPad.
  • They can be plugged into the planes audio system so that you can listen to the in-flight entertainment with them rather than the crappy ones you get on the plane
  • They are completely comfortable. I wore them for the entire flight with no discomfort whatsoever
  • The battery last for 38 hours. Thats more then enough to fly to USA and back on one set of batteries
  • No engine noise
  • No crying baby noise
  • No annoying chatter from the people around you
  • They come with a hard case to protect them from being damaged. So you can throw them in your hand bag or luggage without worry

  • For people with balance issues I have heard that the previous model QC 15 can make you feel dizzy after wearing them. Now I am someone who gets dizzy quite regularly after a virus I had a few years ago damaged my inner ear but these did not affect me at all

I really can’t think of any other Cons so thats saying something. I am so thankful that I ended up spending the money. I was umming and ahhing about them being so expensive but they definitely make flying a lot more bearable and I really don’t think I could fly without them now!

If you are  a nervous flyer then I would 100% recommend getting yourself a pair.

  1. Great idea if your nervous traveler, I am not but can see where it could be more calming to some that are nervous about traveling. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for the comment Nancy! I wish I wast a nervous flyer but at least these make me feel better! Lucky for you that it doesn’t bother you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. They’re very cute and I’ve heard the sound quality is excellent but I’m not sure I can justify that price for earphones. Do they also cancel out all noise just wearing them (silence) rather than having to play music or other sounds, is that the difference?

    1. Thanks for the comment Tony. They are a bit on the pricey side and yes you can sit it total silence and they cancel out all other noise. You don’t have to have music playing to cover it.

  3. I’m heading back home in a couple of days after a gorgeous holiday and starting to think about the flight! So I will look into these headphones for sure!!

    1. They are definitately worth it Leigh. I know what you mean about thinking about the dreaded flight a few days before leaving! Not a pleasant feeling when you are supposed to be enjoying yourself on holidays!

  4. I couldn’t agree with you more!! I don’t love flying either, and made the investment a couple of years back after borrowing a friend’s set on a flight. Couldn’t imagine flying without them. It’s like making your own little cocoon to get lost in; you block out more of the world than just sound. Total winners! x

  5. Great recommendation and love that you touched on the dizziness. I have huge issues with flying and the air pressure affecting my ears, and when I tried to wear headphones in the past like this they seemed to make it a lot worse, so will definitely give these ones a go ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Great to hear Sam. I was actually really worried that I would be completely dizzy for our entire holiday after wearing them for 14 hours straight but they didn’t affect me at all thank goodness!

  6. I have a pair of noise-cancelling headphones (different brand) which I totally agree, change the whole flight experience. They were the only ones I could get in the airport I bought them in, but now I wish I’d held out and got Bose ones like my husband ha, as they seem to be more comfortable.

    1. Oh thats a bugger Fairlie. At least the ones you do have make the experience more bare able! I do love my Bose headphones and so glad that I forked out the money for them! You will just have to steal your husbands off him! ๐Ÿ™‚
