A Road Tripping Adventure: LA to San Francisco Pt 4

After spending a few days at Yosemite National Park which you can read about here it was time to move along our Road Tripping Adventure and head to San Francisco. I was really excited about this part of the trip because I have heard so many people say good things about San Fran and it didn’t disappoint! The accommodation that we stayed at we found on AirBnB. If you haven’t used this website before I highly recommend it. We found the most beautiful garden studio in the Marina District and the girl that owned it has decorated the place so beautifully. It was probably one of the nicest places I have stayed and I really wish we had been there longer to enjoy it more.

Driving in to San Francisco we came across the Bay Bridge and through the city which looks like a pretty cool down town metropolis. After checking into our beautiful studio apartment for the next two days we dashed off to grab some lunch from The Plant Cafe which has all sorts of healthy delicious organic delights and then raced over to Pier 33 to catch our boat over to Alcatraz. I wasn’t very excited about the 2 hour tour we were about to embark on but hubby was and he thoroughly enjoyed it which made me happy. I think its a boy thing!

Once we got back to the mainland we decided to go for an afternoon walk. As we were heading down to the Marina we could see views of the Golden Gate bridge and it happened to be sunset and the sky was just starting to turn some lovely colours so Andrew raced back to our apartment to grab the camera gear while I tried to find a spot to capture it all!

And this is what the sunset turned into as the fog rolled in around the Golden Gate bridge!

After all the colour had faded from the sky we headed to The Plant Cafe for dinner. I highly recommend the Grilled Salmon on Asian noodles. It was devine and so healthy! Then back to our beautiful apartment to sleep on the most comfortable bed I think I have ever laid on! It was like sleeping on a cloud!

The next morning we were going to hire bikes and ride across the Golden Gate bridge but we noticed that there was thick fog covering the entire bridge except for the two spires poking out the top which was always a shot I wanted to capture so we jumped in the car and drove across the bridge to Marin Headland. The views were incredible looking back across to the city with the fog pouring down the side of the mountain onto the bridge. Its something you have to see to believe. We were told later in the day by a local that the fog doesn’t usually hang around that late in the day but the one day that we were there it decided it was going to put on a show! It eventually cleared at about 3pm and came rolling back in again at 6pm.

After exploring Marin Headland we headed over to Bakers Beach to get a different perspective of the bridge. We started walking towards the beach and all of sudden noticed all these nude people lying on the beach and swimming in the water. We kept walking with our heads down but the view of the bridge from this side was just to foggy so we high tailed it back to the car park and went back to the mainland for some lunch and then decided to track down “the pained ladies” which are the houses that featured on the start of Full House if you remember that 90’s sitcom. It was my favourite show when I was growing up so I really wanted to see them! If you want to know where they are, they sit opposite Alamo Square park. You can’t miss them.

We headed out again for sunset, this time from Marin Headland. It was so so windy and freezing cold by that time and really hard to get any decent shots. Unfortunately it was an amazing sunset directly behind me as I was facing the bridge. Probably would have been a great shot from the Marina again but these things happen!

After sunset we headed to Gourmet Burgers for dinner which was delish. It was quite confronting though seeing an obese man injecting himself with his diabetes medication as soon as he finished his meal. It was the second time since we had arrived in USA that I had seen this and never once have I ever seen this in Australia. Obesity is obviously an epidemic in America and makes me thankful for my health and my knowledge of nutrition. After dinner we headed into the city to do some night photography of the Bay Bridge. I have seem way better compositions of this bridge than of what I captured and if I had more time I would love to have explored San Francisco a lot more at night but Im happy with the time we spent there.

After this we walked around the city a little. It was quite sad to see the amount of homeless people sleeping on the streets. I came across this one man and he was lying on his back, in his sleeping bag with some cardboard over him and he was asleep. As I walked past I noticed that he was wearing a pair of noise cancelling headphones which are probably worth about $300. It gave me a bit of a giggle cause he must have scored big time when he found or was given those!  I went back to take a photo of him but he woke up and I was too shy to ask for a photo. By this time, I was exhausted so we hit the hay so to speak.

Next morning we drove to the airport to catch our flight to Portland, Oregon which I will talk about in the next episode of A Road Tripping Adventure!
