A Road Tripping Adventure: Jasper, Canada

We made it to Jasper! YAY! Jasper and Banff have been No.1 on my bucket list for about 10 years and I was finally here! Jasper is the little town in the big Jasper National Park. Its is a gorgeous little unpretentious town. If you’re a nature lover you will love Jasper. There is hiking, horseback riding, dog sledding, whitewater rafting all while you take in the majestic scenes of massive rocky mountains covered in snow and aqua blue coloured lakes. Its also a photographers paradise. Lets explore Jasper a little bit more:

After leaving behind the absolutely amaze balls sunrise in Valemount which you can read about here it was time to head across the border into Jasper National Park. Our first sights were on Mount Robson and wow what a mountain and view it was. It was hard to actually capture what you were seeing. Basically you are just driving down the highway, heading straight for the biggest snowcapped mountain ever. It was a pretty surreal scene.

I was literally riding along in the car with my mouth open the whole way. The only words coming out of my mouth every few seconds were “WOW”. The scenery was just breathtaking. When you come from Australia where its mainly just beautiful beaches, desert and brown lakes, seeing mountains this size with snow and aqua blue lakes is a pretty special thing.

After reaching the little town of Jasper we checked into our hotel and were off again exploring. 5 minutes down the road on the way to check out Patricia Lake we came across a pack of Elk feeding on the side of the road.

Then we were off to Athabasca Falls which is absolutely incredible with the colour and power of the water flowing through the canyon. If anyone asks me what my favourite colour is, I tell them the colour of the water at Athabasca Falls! I also ran into a few photographers there that I follow on Instagram which prompted me to write the blog post “One Perfect Day in Jasper”. You can read more about that there! Now lets get back to the magic that is Athabasca Falls:

After a massive day and a fizzer of a sunset we headed back to our hotel for some much needed rest. Next morning we were up early for sunrise back at Patricia Lake, There was another bunch of photographers running around. They were all in Jasper for the Dark Nights Sky Festival that was on for the week. There were a few guys clowning around with a canoe and taking photos of each other. They were good entertainment while we all waited for the sun to rise.

Once the sun came up we moved around to the side of Patricia Lake and there was another photographer over there photographing the beautiful light shining on the mountain. We got talking to him and he was the loveliest guy who gave us so much information about the area and was so passionate about his home. I remember him telling me about the bare patch of trees in the photo below, well for one week of the year (which was about 3 weeks before we got to Canada), the leaves on those trees turn this vivid yellow colour and they feel like satin to touch. I remember thinking – that is so cute for a guy to notice such intricate things! Anyway, I grabbed his Instagram handle (as you do these days) and we started following each other and still stay in touch. I love the power of social media! If you are interested his name is Stevin Tuchiwsky (IG = @stevint). You should go and give him a follow, his work is pretty awesome and Im so happy to have met him that day!

By this time the sun was well up and my stomach was trying to tell me to feed it so off we went in search of pancakes! After breakfast we were off to explore Maligne Canyon and Maligne Lake. The natural beauty around Jasper is just incredible.

We then headed to Pyramid Lake for sunset which was – Oh just another another amazing lake with snow capped mountains and blue water!

And that night we had the amazing opportunity to get on the Jasper Sky Tram to head up to the top of Whistler Mountain to photograph the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis. You can read more about that here. You can just faintly see the northern lights. They are green hue just above the top of the mountain. That is one experience I won’t forget in a hurry!

After one mind blowing day it was time to hit the hay. Next morning it was up early again to photograph sunrise back at Patricia Lake and then time for world renowned drive from Japser to Banff.
